ST. GEORGES – Being a freshman in high school is a challenge in itself, let alone being key contributors on the Middletown girls’ soccer team.
9th graders Cecily DiVirgilio and Hayley Rohrer seem up to the task so far with each scoring a goal in the 4th-ranked Cavaliers 4-0 win over host St. Georges Wednesday afternoon. The win moves Middletown to 3-0 on the young season.
“They’re very good young players and having some success gives them confidence,” Middletown head coach Brian Derrickson said. “Their talent is nice to have for the future of the program.”
“They’ve improved our backline and they’ve made us a better team,” added junior Rachel Finelli, who scored two goals and assisted on DiVirglio’s tally. “We couldn’t be more thankful for better freshmen.”
“It’s difficult to come into a school and on a team where they’ve been playing together for years,” said DiVirgilio, who booted a pass from Finelli by Morgan Mitchell in the 15th minute of the second half. “But they’ve been so welcoming towards us, it’s been amazing.”
After a slow start to the match, Finelli got the Cavaliers started on a penalty kick, blasting one to her right side and past Mitchell for the first goal. Finelli used her speed on the second goal, outrunning Hawk defenders before sliding the ball over to DiVirgilio for her goal. Finelli’s second goal, assisted by Alexandria Rodriguez, was a right-footed rocket that zipped into the net for a 3-0 lead just 15 minutes into the second half.
“Rachel is one of our workhorses,” Derrickson said. “We worry about her sometimes, possibly getting injured, but she is a very hard worker.”
Rohrer added one more for good measure in the game’s 76th minute, a free kick from the right side that carried between her teammates and several St. Georges defenders before finding the left corner of the net.
“So far, everyone’s taken us under their wing, helping us out in practice and directing us on the field,” Rohrer said. “So our bond makes us a better team.”
And an almost unbeatable team. Aside from their semifinal loss to Caesar Rodney in the state tournament last spring, the Cavaliers have gone 16-0-2 in their last 18 regular season games.
Derrickson prefers that his players not think about that impressive run.
“It’s a situation where we are aware of it, but we have a goal and I don’t think the win streak is something they think about,” he said.
Right on cue, Rohrer said, “We take it one match at a time. We don’t think about how we’re going to beat the next team, we just practice and work hard.”
