Junior, soccer
THE WEEK: Had 13 saves as the third-seeded Hillers (16-2) knocked off top-seeded Indian River 4-2 in the DIAA Division II championship game on Nov. 19 at Smyrna High.
THE WEATHER: The title game was played in a roaring, 30-mph wind. The Hillers built a 4-0 lead with the wind at their backs in the first half, but they knew it would get tougher in the final 40 minutes. “The second half, it was much worse,” Anderson said. “The wind was blowing against us. Their corner kicks were really tough to pick up on, just how hard it was blowing toward the goal.”
THE COACH SAYS: “This year, he has really grown as a vocal leader on the team,” Tower Hill coach Chris Aitken said. “I think the team has really kind of gotten behind him. They trust him in different situations.”
THE STRENGTH: “My mental game, just being aware of situations, knowing when to come out, when to push it up the field, when to hold back,” said Anderson, a three-year starter. “It may seem like an easy job, but as a goalie, you’ve got to be aware of all 10 of your teammates. You’ve got to be able to control the game.”
THE STOPS: “He’s a very good stop shot goalie,” Aitken said. “He has numerous saves one v. one. We had a situation this year where it was a one v. one against him, and I knew it wasn’t going in. I have all the confidence in the world with him in that.”
THE VERSATILITY: Anderson also played basketball last season, but will play squash this winter. His favorite sport is baseball, which he plays all spring and summer. “All of those sports include lateral movement,” he said. “You’ve got to be on your toes, you’ve got to be aware of situations. I think they all work hand in hand.”
THE CHAMPIONSHIP: “It was surreal,” Anderson said. “A moment like that, you just try to take in as much as you can. It doesn’t happen often at all, so I tried my best to celebrate as much as I could. It was a great win for our whole team.”
THE CLASSROOM: Anderson’s favorite subject is Math. “It’s definitely my best subject, and I’ve just always enjoyed it,” he said.
THE FUTURE: “I’m going to try to play baseball in college, and keep soccer in mind if I can,” Anderson said.
